Etymology: Chlopsis: Greek, chloea = green + Greek, opsis = appearance (Ref. 45335); nanhaiensis: Named for Nan Hai, the Chinese name for the South China Sea where the holotype apparently was captured by commercial fishermen.

Distinguished from its congeners by its bicolored pigmentation, dorsal origin approximately one eye-diameter behind gill opening and the low vertebral count [total 120 (118+, incomplete, tail regenerated), predorsal 12, preanal 35, precaudal 54] (Ref. 106145).
