This species is distinguished by the following characters: D 44-46; A 21-22; pectoral rays 14-16; 103-107 pored lateral line scales; 2-3 small scales dorsally on opercle; gill rakers 5-6 + 21-23 (Ref. 83306); a row of about 10 black spots at margin of dorsal fin except posteriorly; caudal fin with a dusky posterior margin that broadens toward lobe tips, at least in males; body width 8.0-8.8% SL; longest dorsal ray 5.2--5.6% SL; longest anal ray 5.9-6.7% SL (Ref. 83531).
