Etymology: Trimma: Greek, trimma, -atos = something crushed (Ref. 45335)sanguinellum: Name from Sanguinello, a variety of blood orange, whose red-suffused flesh resembles this species’ unusual body color; name from Latin ‘sanguinellus’ meaning ‘little blood’; noun in apposition.

This species is distinguished by a naked predorsal midline with a fleshy ridge; a slightly elongate second dorsal spine; interorbital trenches; no opercular scales; fifth pelvic fin ray unbranched; color in life is uniformly orange-red (Ref. 59340); characterized further by having all pectoral rays unbranched, 50-65% length of fourth ray; longitudinal scale series 22-26; depth of body 3.6-4.0 in SL (Ref. 90102).
