Etymology: Oreoglanis: Greek, oreos = mountain+Greek, glanis = Latin, aurum = gold + Greek, glanis = a fish that can eat the bait without touching the hook; a cat fish (Ref. 45335); insignis: Named for the numerous pale-colored patches on its body.

Dorsal soft rays (total): 6; Anal soft rays: 3 - 4. Lower lip with a median notch and having an entire posterior margin. Caudal fin emarginate. Male genital papilla immediately behind the anus in a depression terminating posteriorly with a straight transverse wall (Ref. 44353).
