Etymology: Schismatogobius: Greek, schisma, -atos = crack, fissure + latin, gobius = gudgeon (Ref. 45335); fuligimentus: From the deep black pigmentation on the chin and ventral side of the head.

Dorsal spines (total): 7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9; Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 9. Compared to other species of Schismatogobius, it has the lowest number of pectoral fin rays and the female's entire ventral side of head with deep black pigmentation (Ref. 39635).

Inhabits shallow and clear-water riffles with slow to moderate current in rivers with substrate of small to medium gravel. Elevations of type localities of adult specimens range from 18 m to 250 m, however, it may be an amphidromous species (Ref. 39635).
