Etymology: Schismatogobius: Greek, schisma, -atos = crack, fissure + latin, gobius = gudgeon (Ref. 45335); fuligimentus: From the deep black pigmentation on the chin and ventral side of the head.

Inhabits shallow and clear-water riffles with slow to moderate current in rivers with substrate of small to medium gravel. Elevations of type localities of adult specimens range from 18 m to 250 m, however, it may be an amphidromous species (Ref. 39635).
