Actinopterygii (ray-finned fishes) > Perciformes
(Perch-likes) > Nemipteridae
(Threadfin breams, Whiptail breams)
Etymology: Nemipterus: Greek, nema, -atos = filament + Greek, pteron = wing, fin (Ref. 45335); thosaporni: Named for Dr Thosaporn Wongratana, who kindly made available his fine illustrations of Nemipterus species.
Environment: milieu / climate zone / depth range / distribution range
Marine; demersal; depth range 10 - 80 m (Ref. 12260). Tropical; 30°N - 9°S
Western Pacific: Strait of Malacca and Gulf of Thailand to southern Japan. This species has been previously misidentified as Nemipterus marginatus by most authors (Ref. 3810).
Size / Weight / Age
Maturity: Lm ?  range ? - ? cm
Max length : 21.5 cm SL male/unsexed; (Ref. 3810); common length : 16.0 cm SL male/unsexed; (Ref. 3810)
soft rays: 7. Lower edge of eye touching or just above a line from tip of snout to upper pectoral-fin base; lower edge of suborbital slightly emarginate. Dorsal fin origin about 3-7 scale rows from imaginary line projected upward from posterior edge of suborbital to dorsal profile. Pectoral and pelvic fins long, reaching to or just short of level of anal-fin origin. Closely resembles N. bathybius Snyder, but has no yellow stripe on either side of the ventral midline and the upper tip of the caudal fin not drawn into a distinct filament. Axillary scale present.
