Etymology: Microthrissa: Grek, mikros = small + Greek, thrissa, -es = shad (Ref. 45335);  whiteheadi: Named in honor of Dr. P.J.P. Whitehead of the British Museum (Natural History), London, whose numerous publications on clupeoid fishes have contributed substantially to our knowledge of this group (Ref. 46514).

Short description Morphology | Morphometrics

Dorsal spines (total): 0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 11-14; Anal spines: 0; Anal soft rays: 20 - 25; Vertebrae: 39 - 40. Diagnosis: Microthrissa whiteheadi is characterized by the shape of its premaxillary bones, moderately flattened and lacking a medial notch; furthermore, the species can be recognized by its numerous, 32-40, backward directed premaxillary teeth (Ref. 46514, 47399). It is closely related to Microthrissa royauxi; the most important character to distinguish these species is the shape of the premaxillary; the medial notch as found in M. royauxi is absent in M. whiteheadi; the latter also has 32-40 premaxilla teeth vs. 16-26 in M. royauxi; the greater number of prepelvic scutes anterior to the pectoral fin origin is another important feature to distinguish both species (Ref. 46514). The same characters, premaxilla shape, number of premaxilla teeth and prepelvic scutes anterior to pectoral fin, also distinguish M. whiteheadi from M. minuta; additional characters to separate these species are the number of gillrakers on the lower part of the first branchial arch, 14-18 in M. whiteheadi vs. 18-22 in M. minuta; the number of anal finrays, 20-25 vs. 19-21; and the number of prepelvic scutes, 13-16 vs. 11-12 (Ref. 46514).
