Actinopterygii (ray-finned fishes) > Stomiiformes
(Lightfishes and dragonfishes) > Stomiidae
(Barbeled dragonfishes) > Melanostomiinae
Etymology: Leptostomias: Greek, leptos = thin + Greek, stoma = mouth (Ref. 45335).
Environment: milieu / climate zone / depth range / distribution range
Marine; pelagic-oceanic. Subtropical; 30°N - 34°S
Eastern Atlantic: Canary Islands to Angola but not recorded from the Gulf of Guinea; between 45°N and 50°N, and off South Africa. Also known from the Northwest Pacific. Leptostomias gracilis, Leptostomias macropogon, Leptostomias longibarba, Leptostomias bermudensis, Leptostomias analis and Leptostomias leptobolus are probably synonyms of a single species (the entire complex needs a thorough study, Ref. 4468).
