Classification of Labridae: Following the first comprehensive phylogeny of the family and allies (Near et al., 2025: Ref. 138156), we have adapted the classification in FishBase. Labridae now includes the Scaridae (parrotfishes) as Labridae: Scarinae, and Odacide as Labridae: Hypsigenyinae: Odacini (cales and weed-whitings). See the note.

Following their recent phylogenetic analysis of sturgeons, Brownstein and Near (2025) moved some species in resurrected genera. However, Kottelat and Freyhof (2025) pointed out a number of nomenclatural issues since, and ECoF reversed the changes in the December 2025 version, which was too late for us, as the database was already fixed for this update. It will be corrected in the next update.

A new table on the relationship between the first maturity and the respiration in fishes has been created, containing over 500 records, now including the sturgeons. Learn more in the FishBase Book. Work in progress.
