Remarks Males have short filamentous dorsal and anal fin rays, 2-5 large external conical teeth on each jaws at the corner of the mouth. The genital papilla of the male forms a short tube, broader than long while the female genital papilla forms a bilobed structure.

Diagnosis

Distinguished from all other members of the genus by the combination of the following characters: 41-47 vertical rows of scales; 8-9 dorsal rays; 20-25 anal rays; and the distinctive color pattern of males (Ref. 26687).

Description: Males have a greyish brown head and body, with black vertically elongate blotches forming a more or less regular row along the axial stripe. Few smaller blotches irregularly distributed on body. Eye blue. Dorsal, anal, caudal and pelvic fins blackish and pectoral fin hyaline. Females have lighter brown head and body with smaller, less conspicuous black or without blotches. Fins are greyish to hyaline (Ref 26687).
