Male with 6 spines in first dorsal fin, female with 5; pectoral rays almost always 15; dusky to blackish band extending midlaterally from behind pectoral base to below origin of second dorsal fin in male and ending as a small spot at hypural base in female; in life male with lower two thirds of body between second dorsal and anal fins, and caudal peduncle bright red.
