Definition of Term

water hardness
(English) The concentration of calcium and magnesium ions in water expressed as p.p.m. or mg/l of calcium carbonate equivalents. Soft water is 0-60, moderately hard 60-120, hard 120-180 and very hard 180+ p.p.m. [dH = degree in German hardness; 10 mg/L CaO or 17.848 ppm or 17.85 mg/L CaCO3].
