Definition of Term

opercle (View picture)
(English) The large bone which forms the upper posterior part of the operculum; often bears one to three backward-directed spines in the higher fishes; usually the largest of the thin bones forming the gill cover in bony fishes. Sometimes used in aging studies. (See also: operculum, bony fishes, gill)
