||The purpose of the Council is to promote the development, conservation and management of living marine resources; to formulate and recommend conservation measures; to develop and proper utilize the resources of the Mediterranean and contiguous waters through international cooperation; to encourage training cooperative projects.
||[24 Sep 1949] Agreement for the Establishment of a General Fisheries Council for the Mediterranean (entered into force 03 Dec 1963).
[22 May 1963] Amendments to the Agreement adopted by the General Fisheries Council For the Mediterranean at its first special session, held at Rome, 21-22 May 1963, and approved on 3 December 1963 by resolution no. 39/63 of the twelfth session of the Conference of the Food and Agriculture Organization from 16 November to 5 December 1963.
