Type locality of Engraulis chinensis Amoy (currently Xiamen), BMNH 1860.7.20.103, 8.24 cm SL (lectotype) (Ref. 28119). Found in the north from the mouth of Changjiang River (=Yangtze River), East China Sea to the south in Shantou of Guangdong Province in South China Sea. Also recorded from Fujian Province (Ref. 47439).
