Type locality, South Carolina (Ref. 79012). Common; locally abundant. Introduced population in Pecos River, Texas is displacing native Pecos pupfish, Cyprinodon pecosensis (Ref. 5723, 86798). Florida, Georgia, Gulf Coast for the subspecies C. v. variegatus only. Also Ref. 27549, 93252.
