Known from the Atlantic and Gulf slope drainages from Maine to south Texas, Great Lakes, and Mississippi River basins west to Montana, and west Oklahoma and Texas (Ref. 86798). Recorded from the Coastal Plain (Ref. 10294). Type locality: New York (Ref. 79012). Introduced elsewhere in the country via bait buckets (Ref. 86798). Bred in Arkansas for bait (Ref. 26870). Common, except in uplands (Ref. 86798). Chesapeake Bay: common to abundant in all tributaries of Chesapeake Bay. Occasionally enters brackish areas with salinities as high as 17% (Ref. 93252). |
