Type locality of Ammocoetes aureus, Anvik, Yukon River (Ref. 117245). Occurs throughout Arctic Alaska to the Kenai Peninsula, Brooks Lake, Brooks and Naknek rivers (Naknek River Basin), Nushagak and Yukon rivers, Bering Sea at St. Lawrence Island and Bering Strait; Beaufort Sea (between Point Barrow, Alaska and Anderson River, Canada) (Ref. 89241); including the Kuskokwim and Tanana river drainages (Ref. 27547). The Naknek River has both anadromous and freshwater form; the Chatanika River with strictly freshwater forms; and the lower Yukon with mostly anadromous forms (Ref. 27547). A small population is known to spawn in the Chatanika River, a few kilometers below the Elliot Highway Bridge (Ref. 27547). In the Yukon, it was once taken in large numbers with dip nets and used for food (Ref. 11366) by the indigenous people, especially their dogs into the 20th century. A renewed interest in starting a commercial fishery for upstream migrants in the area for the Asian market in the USA and South Korea (Ref. 117245).
