Restricted to the lagoon of Santa Magdalena and Etzatlan in Jalisco. Found in flat regions and swampy areas of the isolated Santa Magdalena basin (Ref. 26130). Believed to be extinct since 1984 but it was rediscovered in February 1990 (Ref. 32716). Also Ref. 4537.

Status of threat: endangered; status improved since 1989 listing. Criteria: 1,5 (http://fisc.er.usgs.gov/afs/) (Ref. 81264).
