Known from Awash River (Ref. 58460), Lake Tana (Ref. 96382, 128753) and the middle reaches of the Gojeb River, a tributary of the Omo River (Ref. 31508). Barb morphotypes in Lake Tana represent a species flock that originated via sympatric speciation with more rapid morphological than cytogenetic and molecular differentiation (Ref. 31694).
