Type locality, partly dried-up buffalo wallow, Beatrice Lagoon, Adelaide River drainage, Northern Territory, NTM S.11427-001 (holotype of Chlamydogobius ranunculus, 2.75 cm SL) (Ref. 43716). Common in coastal localities of northern Australia, from the Adelaide River, North Territory and Townsville, Queensland (Ref. 44894); including Adelaide river, Leanyer swamp, McArthur river, Marjarie creek and Alligator river systems (NT), Norman river near Karumba, Prince of Wales Island, Hinchinbrook channel and Townsville (Qld) (Ref. 44894).
