Papua New Guinea country information

Common names: Jardine's barramundi, Spotted barramundi
Occurrence: native
Salinity: freshwater
Abundance: scarce (very unlikely) | Ref: National Fisheries Authority, Papua New Guinea, 2005
Importance: | Ref:
Aquaculture: | Ref:
Regulations: | Ref:
Uses: live export: yes;
Comments: Known from streams and lakes in the Western Province, including Strickland (Ref. 83518), Bensbach, Morehead and Fly rivers and Lake Murray (Ref. 58511). People of Bensbach River area have been harvesting wild fingerlings for sale across the nearby international border in Indonesia's Papua Province (Ref. 58511). A total of 50,000 juveniles caught in the wild were exported to Singapore in November 2003 (purchased at a total cost of K70, 000 ~ 21,350 USD). In 2004, a single juvenile cost K1.30 ~ 0.41 USD, a substantial amount in the Obo and Lake Murray areas and a fisherman is estimated to earn around K300 per day ~95 USD during the breeding season, effecting an increase in fishing effort. In 2004 and 2005 (Ref. 83518). Relatively low population of adults in the wild due to slow maturation and low fecundity. Collection of juveniles for the aquarium trade could become non-sustainable if caution is not exercised (Ref. 83518). Also Ref. 6993, 13533, 75154.

биология     глоссарий (например epibenthic)

Adults occur in still waters of streams and swamps where it is usually seen near the surface or close to shore among aquatic vegetation (Ref. 2847, 44894). Solitary, territorial and spawn prior to the wet season when surface water temperatures approach 30°C (Ref. 44894). Young feed primarily on microcrustaceans (Ref. 2847). Primarily a surface feeder, feeding on a variety of terrestrial and aquatic insects, small fishes, frogs, crustaceans, and some plant material (Ref. 44894). Mouthbrooders (Ref. 56180). Maximum weight reported in Ref. 5259 may be 12.27 kg (W. Lau, pers. Comm. 07/05). Important food fish (Ref. 58511) and a valuable aquarium fish (Ref. 83518).

Life cycle and mating behavior половая зрелость | размножение | нерест | икра | Fecundity | личинки

Fertilized eggs are carried in the mouth of the female. Eggs hatch in 1-2 weeks. Larvae, with their enlarged yolk sac, are kept in or close to the mouth for another 4 or 5 weeks. Young fish commence feeding, primarily on microcrustaceans, at a size of 2-3 cm, well before the yolk sac is entirely resorbed. Become independent at a length of 3.5-4.0 cm.
