Etymology: Tylochromis: Greek, tylos = callus + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335); trewavasae: Named for Dr. Ethelwynn Trewavas who has so generously shared her knowledge of the African Cichlidae with colleagues and students, and who originally brought the unusual Tylochromis specimen to the authors attention (Ref. 52346).

Dorsale stekels (totaal): 14; Dorsale zachte stralen (totaal): 14; Anale stekels 3; Anale zachte stralen: 7; Wervels: 28. Diagnosis: 13 or fewer gill-rakers along lower limb of first arch; 38 lateral line scales; head length 35.2% SL; predorsal length 44.3% SL; rapid rise in dorsal spine length from 1st to 4th; pectoral fins reach to level of spinous anal fin (Ref. 52346).

Mainly feeds on insects and their larvae; maternal mouthbrooder that does not pair-bond (Ref. 52307).
