Etymology:

marin bathypélagique; océanodrome (Ref. 51243); profondeur 40 - 500 m (Ref. 5951). Deep-water; 48°N - 52°S, 79°W - 153°W

Eastern Atlantic: Morocco to Mauritania and also in Angola; west of the Cape Peninsula, South Africa (Ref. 4066). Northwest Atlantic: Canada (Ref. 5951). Western Atlantic: USA to Argentina but with lower abundance in the South Sargasso Sea and absent in the minimum region off Brazil. Also known in the equatorial waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Tropical regions of the Atlantic up to 38°S (Ref. 47377).

High-oceanic, meso- (Ref. 4479, 75154) and epipelagic (Ref. 58302). Found between 225-450 m during the day and between 40-225 m at night (Ref. 4479). Reach sexual maturity at 5 cm (Ref. 47377).
