Etymology: Gobionotothen: Latin, gobius = gudgeon + see under Notothenia;  marionensis: marionensis for the type locality , Marion, a bleak 13 mile long Subantarctic island, 1,100 miles southeast of Cape Horn, discovered in 1772 by M. Marion du Fresne commanding a French surveying expedition (Ref. 11892).

Rückenflossenstacheln (insgesamt): 7; Rückenflossenweichstrahlen (insgesamt): 29; Afterflossenweichstrahlen: 27. Back with transverse bars, break up into spots on the sides of the body. Pectorals with series of small dark spots on the rays, often with a blackish spot on the upper part of pectoral base (Ref. 11892).
