Etymology: Pseudochromis: Greek, pseudes = false + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335);  oligochrysus: Name from Greek that means 'having little gold'; referring to the “having little gold”, alluding to the scant, though distinctive yellow markings (when viewed underwater, the yellow markings around the eye are distinctly obvious, as are the bright yellow pelvic fins..

Spine dorsali (totale): 3; Raggi dorsali molli (totale): 25-27; Spine anali 3; Raggi anali molli: 16; Vertebre: 26. This species is distinguished by the following set of characters: D III,25-27, usually III,26; A III,16; 16 circumpeduncular scales; 21-27 predorsal scales; horizontal scale rows above anal-fin origin 13-15 + 1 + 3 = 17-19; rounded caudal fin; upper part of pectoral-fin base with a dark spot; anterior part of body with yellow spots or markings (Ref. 89054).

Exclusively found in reefs subject to strong currents and frequent cold-water upwellings; associated with coral overhangs or large rubble pieces on hard bottom substrates. When approached, individuals retreat under the rubble or overhang (Ref. 89054).
