Etymology: Placidochromis: Latin, placidus = of peaceful or tranquile appearance + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335); koningsi: Named in honor of Ad Konings, a well-known author and publisher on cichlids, with particular interest in the Lake Malawi (Konings, 1995; 2001) and Lake Tanganyika cichlid faunas (Ref. 55898).

Diagnosis: head length 36.6-38.1 %SL; snout length 33.5-34.5 % head length; lower jaw length 33.5-34.5 % head length; outer oral teeth unicuspid; no inner oral tooth rows; premaxillary pedicel length 30.6-30.6 % head length; cheek depth 23.7-25.1 % head length; lachrymal depth 21.6-22.0 % head length; orbital width 41.5-42.9 % head width; lower pharyngeal dentition enlarged and molariform; body depth 38.8-39.6 %SL (Ref. 55898).
