Etymology: Barathronus: Greek, barathron = abyss + ending -ites, that lives there; the Barathron was a deep pit in Athens where criminals were thrown; 1849 +Greek, onos = hake.

Short description Morfología | Morfometría

Radios blandos dorsales (total): 80-85; Radios blandos anales: 60 - 65. The species described from a juvenile have few morphometric characters with some meristic characters that are approximations. It is distinguished by the following set of characters that seems to be diagnostic: D 80-85, A 60-65, pectoral-fin rays 21; precaudal vertebrae 37, total vertebrae 84; long rakers on anterior gill arch 29. Remains of a broken fang laterally on vomer and peritoneum transparent (Ref. 121928).
