Etymology: Acanthobrama: Greek, akantha = thorn + old French breme, bresme, a fresh water fish; 1460 (Ref. 45335).

; acqua dolce benthopelagico. Subtropical
Asia: endemic to the Jordan River drainage basin, where it is widely distributed in lakes and most tributaries. In the coastal plain of Palestine it occurs only in the Nahr al-Muqatta (Qishon River).

Spine dorsali (totale): 0; Raggi dorsali molli (totale): 10; Spine anali 0; Raggi anali molli: 12 - 16. Elongate and compressed body. Mouth sub terminal, its cleft reaching to below the nostrils. Pharyngeal teeth 5-5, smooth and hooked.
Found near the bottom of lakes, ponds and streams of slow-flowing water. Spawning season: January to April.
