Etymology: Filimanus: Latin, filum = thread + latin, manus = hand (Ref. 45335);  sealei: Named for A. Seale of the Bureau of Science for the Philippine Islands, the first to recognize the distinctness of this species (Ref. 39607).

Distinguished by having eight (occasionally seven) pectoral filaments, not reaching midpoint of anal fin; depth of posterior margin of maxilla less than eye diameter; snout pointed; body in life usually blue above and silvery below (Ref. 39607); 11 anal-fin soft rays; 46-50 gill rakers; depth of posterior margin of maxilla less than eye diameter (Ref. 95025).
