Etymology: Etheostoma: Greek, etheo = to strain + Greek, stoma = mouth; Rafinesque said "various mouths", but Jordan and Evermann suggest the name might have been intended as "Heterostoma (Ref. 45335); barrenense: barrenense meaning of the Barren (Ref. 10294).

North America: occurs only in Barren River system (except Gasper River) in southern central Kentucky and northern central Tennessee, USA.
