Asia: Nam Ma basin (Laos) and Viet Nam to southeastern Siberia (Ref. 43281). Recorded from Amur river basin (Ref. 13397).

Adults occur mainly in river channels and lakes. They feed on the bottom on insects (particularly on trichopterans and chironomids), mollusks, occasionally on fishes (Ref. 6868). Oviparous (Ref. 205). Eggs are guarded by the males (Ref. 45232). Important food fish (Ref. 89718).
Males have been reported to guard both the eggs and larvae in the nest hole, previously dug by the male in the clay bottom (Ref. 4576).
