Etymology: Pseudochondrostoma: Name refers to its morphological similarity with the genus Chondrostoma
as a consequence of homoplasy in multiple traits..
Environment: milieu / climate zone / depth range / distribution range
Freshwater; benthopelagic. Temperate; 41°N - 36°N, 10°W - 2°W
Europe: Tagus drainage in Spain and Portugal; Vouga, Modego, Algoa and Sado drainages in Portugal. Introduced in Jucar and Segura drainages in Spain. In Appendix III of the Bern Convention (protected fauna).

Maturity: Lm 9.0  range ? - ? cm
Max length : 40.0 cm SL male/unsexed; (Ref. 59043)
Diagnosed from its congeners by having the following characters: lower jaw edge straight; 61-75 + 3-4 scales on lateral line; anal fin usually with 9½ branched rays; 22-31 gill rakers; usually 6-5 pharyngeal teeth; and caudal peduncle depth 1.8-2.2 times in its length (Ref. 59043).
Inhabits middle stretches of rivers in areas with current. Can survive in reservoirs. Occurs in groups, especially during pre-reproduction migration (Ref. 59043). Also found in lakes (Ref. 26100).
