Myomeres usually 36-39 + 16-19 = 53-55; anal fin rays 11-13; anal fin ray 1 under dorsal fin 3-6 (usually 4-5); much lateral pigment, especially ventrolaterally and on tail. Notochord flexion occurs before hatching.
Pigmentation:
Larvae: heavy dorsally on head; on mandible and beak; on gill cover after about 7 mm; internally on and under brain; 2 longitudinal rows on dorsum from nape to caudal peduncle; internal series along notochord; laterally on trunk and tail; usually light dorsolaterally on trunk; heavy on upper half of gas bladder and gut, spreading ventrad; light on ventrum except heavy on gular area and along anal fin base; at end of dorsal fin, spreading over last 5-6 rays by about 11 mm; light on caudal fin rays, light on pectoral fins by about 11 mm.
Juvenile: 7 bars; heavy on pelvic fins.
