Leptocephalus larvae (50 mm TL); gut straight and long (about 70-75% TL), shortens at metamorphosis; lower jaw protrudes in glass eel and elver. Tail sharply pointed. Body compressed except for head; maximum depth at midpoint of body 16% of TL; preanal length 74% of TL; head 8% of TL; liver long and narrow, between myomeres 12 and 35. Dorsal fin origin at myomere 61; 9 myomeres between dorsal and anal fin origins (Ref. 39467). Larval teeth prominent, 16 in the left side of upper jaw (Ref. 39467). 'Glass eel' stage: 52 mm TL, dorsal, anal and caudal fins developed; myomeres 109. A few chromatophores scattered on body; adult teeth developing (Ref. 39467). Pigmentation: none, except in the eye, until glass eel stage. Sequence of fin formation: pectoral fins form late; pelvic fin absent.
