| Body extremely slender and elongate; gut elongate and slender, trailing in flexion and postflexion; head flat; elliptical eyes on elongate stalks supported by cartilaginous rods (up to 27% BL); pectoral fin lost at transformation; diminutive males lack pelvic fins, have poorly developed gut, large gonads, large eyes and postorbital luminous gland. Pigmentation: Preflexion: at about 6.0 mm, a series of about 8 embedded dashes along isthmus; at about 9.0 mm, a series of oblique dashes begins to form at posterior margin of each hypaxial myomere. Flexion-postflexion: isthmus dashes tend to form three groups, range of 5-13 (usually 8); hypaxial dashes spread into myosepta when expanded; scattered on trailing gut. Transformation: 1 melanophore on each hypaxial myoseptum. Sequence of fin development: caudal and dorsal, anal, pelvics. | ||||
