  Etymology of specific epithet  
The name xanthopterygion is from the Greek xanthos (yellow), pterygion (fin)—referring to the yellow coloration of the lower caudal-fin lobe. The specific name of the new species is a noun in apposition to the generic name Symphysanodon (Ref. 87359).
