Definition of Term

swim bladder (View picture)
(English) A thin membranous, sometimes alveolated gas-filled sac lying in the upper part of the body cavity of many bony fishes just beneath the vertebral column. Contains a varying mixture of gases, not identical to the composition of air. May be one, two or three chambered. May be connected to the gut by a tube, the ductus pneumaticus (then called physostomous) or unconnected (then called physoclistous). May function as one or more of:- hydrostatic organ, sound producing organ, sound receptor, respiratory organ. Found in Actinopterygii. Often lacking in bottom fishes. Sometimes called swim bladder or air bladder, less appropriate terms. (See also: gas bladder, esophagus, physoclistous)

(French) Sac dur rempli du gaz qui se trouve dans la partie supérieure de la cavité du corps en bas la colonne vertébrale chez beaucoup de poissons osseux ; sa fonction principale est pour compenser le poids de tissu lourd tel qu'os. Chez quelques poissons la vessie natatoire est utilisée pour la production de son ou pour la respiration. Reliée à l'oesophage chez les poissons primitifs. (Portuguese) Saco de com gás e de paredes espessas existente na região superior da cavidade do corpo de alguns peixes ósseos, mesmo por baixo da coluna vertebral; a sua função principal é a de equilibrar o peso de tecidos mais pesados, como o ósseo. Nalguns peixes é utilizada para produzir som ou para complementar a respiração. Nas espécies mais primitivas está ligada ao esófago. (See also: gas bladder, esophagus, physoclistous)
