benthopelagic; freshwater |
Asia: endemic to Sri Lanka. |

Occurs in rocky areas of hill streams, almost always in fast-flowing water. More common in deeper and more heavily shaded areas of clear-water streams. Occurs sympatrically with G. ceylonensis in its limited range. Feeds essentially on algae in captivity. This species is easy to maintain in aquarium. |
Critically Endangered (CR); Date assessed: 07 August 2019 (B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii)) Ref. (130435)
|
harmless |
Restricted to montane streams of the Knuckles Range in Mahaweli Basin, but exact distributional range not clearly understood as it is often confused with G. ceylonensis (Ref. 11966). A much wider range is proposed in unpublished reports (Ref. 6028). Siltation poses threat to the fish population (Ref. 11966). |
