Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater
Distribution:  South America: rio São João drainage in Brazil.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal soft rays (total): 7-7; Anal soft rays: 6-6. Rictal barbel coalesced with the lower lip in a complex and ornamented fringe; slender pectoral-fin spine, thinner than pelvic-fin spine; lateral process of cleithrum developed above the origin of pectoral fin; mature males have short hypertrophied odontodes on margins of head hidden by big fleshy lobes (Ref. 42856).
