Max. size:  6.4 cm TL (male/unsexed); max. reported age: 2 years
Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater
Distribution:  North America: Mississippi River basin from Pennsylvania, USA to New Brunswick in Canada, Kansas, and Oklahoma, and from Minnesota and Wisconsin south to Alabama and Louisiana, USA; Calcasieu River in Louisiana, USA to Rio Grande in Texas in USA and Mexico.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Occurs usually over sand in quiet pools and backwaters of small to large rivers (Ref. 5723, 10294). Spawns over sluggish riffles composed of sand or fine gravel (Ref. 79012).
