Family:  Microstomatidae (Pencil smelts)
Max. size:  20 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  pelagic-oceanic; marine; depth range - 458 m
Distribution:  Western Indian Ocean: off Natal; also from west of Cape Peninsula in South Africa. The taxonomy of Nansenia is confused and the precise range of this species is difficult to define.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Mesopelagic species.
