Family:  Mullidae (Goatfishes)
Max. size:  40 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  reef-associated; marine; depth range 30 - 110 m
Distribution:  Indo-Pacific: Reunion to the Hawaiian, Marquesan, and Society islands, north to the Ryukyu Islands, south to Tonga; Mariana and Marshall Islands in Micronesia.
Diagnosis:  Anal spines: 1-1; Anal soft rays: 7-8
Biology:  This schooling species occurs at depths exceeding 30 m to at least 110 over sandy patches and limestone bottoms (Ref. 5439). Benthopelagic (Ref. 58302). It is mainly diurnal. May display four alternating dark red and light red bars on the body when feeding (Ref. 5439).
