Family:  Cyprinidae (Minnows or carps), subfamily: Torinae
Max. size:  53.2 cm FL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater; depth range 1 - 6 m
Distribution:  Africa: endemic to Lake Tana, Ethiopia (Ref. 35835, 96382, 128753).
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 12-13; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 8-8. Body depth at least 1.1 times in head length; ventral fin length at least 1.7 times in head length; nuchal hump steeply rising at occiput; black, blackish red, dark brown or dark green.
Biology:  Prefers rocky substrates in waters less than 6 m deep, especially in the shore areas, but it also occurs over muddy and sandy substrates. It has a mixed diet of mainly fish, insects and macrophytes (Ref. 35835).
