Environment:  demersal; freshwater
Distribution:  South America: Rio Uaupes, Rio Negro drainage, Amazon basin in Brazil.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 2-2; Dorsal soft rays (total): 7-7; Anal soft rays: 4-5. Hypancistrus phantasma differs from all other species of Hypancistrus by its color pattern consisting of a tan base coloration with black spots (vs. a color pattern consisting of a dark base coloration and light spots as in H. contradens, H. inspector, H. lunaorum and H. margaritatus or a color pattern consisting of saddles, vermiculations, bands, or stripes as in H. furunculus, H. debilittera, and H. zebra (Ref. 114591). Description: anal fin i,3-4; pelvic fin i,5 (Ref. 114591).
