Family:  Leuciscidae (Minnows), subfamily: Pogonichthyinae
Max. size:  18 cm TL (male/unsexed); max. reported age: 2 years
Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater
Distribution:  North America: lowland areas of Mississippi River basin from Ohio to Minnesota and south to Louisiana, USA; Gulf drainages from Mobile Bay in Alabama to Brazos River in Texas, USA.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Occurs in pools and backwaters of low-gradient creeks and small to large rivers (Ref. 86798). Oviparous, probably open substratum spawners like congeners (Ref. 205).

Threat to humans:  harmless
