Environment:  bathydemersal; marine; depth range 960 - 1500 m
Distribution:  Pacific Ocean: off Japan, Hawaiian Islands, and New Zealand.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal soft rays (total): 5-5; Anal soft rays: 4-4; Vertebrae: 19-19. This species is distinguished from its congeners in having the following characters: subtriangular disc in outline; illicial trough and esca fully visible in ventral view; tubercles on dorsal surface with 6-8 facets (Ref. 92977); a shelflike rostrum extending anteriorly well beyond the mouth; a dorsal, relatively wide, leaf-shaped dorsal escal lobe slightly bisected ventrally; an illicial cavity completely square in outline and completely visible from the ventral view; tubercles absent on ventral surface of disk (Ref. 40825, 55719). Additional characters due to its redescription (Ref. 55719) are: rostrum width 21-29% of head length; tubercles on the dorsal surface of the disk about half the diameter of those on the lateral margin; and, 13-15 large lateral-line scales on the tail (Ref. 55719). Description: Species has the shortest predorsal (35.3) and jaw-to-anal fin (43.6) distances relative to SL in the genus. Short jaw; narrow mouth; small eyes. Gill rakers shaped as triangular plates with tiny teeth clustered distally. Paired fins strong and moderate in size. Cephalic lateral line scale counts: preopercular 2; subopercular 5; dorsolateral branch of subopercular 3; supraorbital 4 (Ref. 40825).
Biology:  Holotype taken from a depth of 1,500 m (Ref. 33390). Minimum depth from Ref. 58018.
