Family:  Leiognathidae (Slimys, slipmouths, or ponyfishes), subfamily: Gazzinae
Max. size:  17 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  reef-associated; brackish; marine; depth range - 20 m
Distribution:  Indo-West Pacific: Sri Lanka and from Taiwan to Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. Records from eastern Australia needs confirmation (Ref. 47581).
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 8-8; Dorsal soft rays (total): 16-16; Anal spines: 3-3; Anal soft rays: 14-14; Vertebrae: 24-24. Membrane of spinous dorsal fin black at its distal portion (Ref. 47581).
Biology:  Found over sandy or muddy bottoms of coastal inshore waters (Ref. 35849, 47581). Feeds mainly on small fishes, crustaceans and polychaetes (Ref. 3424). Forms schools (Ref. 47581). Larger specimens marketed fresh or dried-salted but most of the catch made into fishmeal or discarded (Ref. 47581).
