Family:  Stomiidae (Barbeled dragonfishes), subfamily: Melanostomiinae
Max. size:  23.2 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  bathypelagic; marine
Distribution:  Eastern Atlantic: off Gibraltar south to Guinea, also from Namibia to South Africa. Western Atlantic: USA to Gulf of Mexico, also between 13°N-8°N, and Brazil.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 22-27; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 39-45. Pectorals occasionally with 1 rudimentary ray.
Biology:  Mesopelagic species (Ref. 4468).
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC); Date assessed: 11 October 2018 Ref. (130435)
Threat to humans:  harmless
