Family:  Cyprinodontidae (Pupfishes), subfamily: Cyprinodontinae
Max. size:  5.14 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater, non-migratory
Distribution:  Central America: Mexico.
Diagnosis:  This species is unique in having the following characters: a long depressed dorsal reaching posteriorly from 3/4 of the length of caudal peduncle to caudal base; dorsal origin in front of pelvic fin; 0-2 teeth on fourth ceratobranchial; lips as thick or thicker than pupil diameter, lower one wide with a marked fold in the cleft; males golden blue from head to body, with 7-8 bars, the first 3-4 only on dorsum, the others to venter; females with central regular ocellus of dorsal fin larger than pupil (Ref. 26729).
Biology:  Area of collection, Charco La Palma, during spring has water temperature of 21°C, clear with muddy bottom easily roiled; algae predominant, with some submerged terrestrials, and formerly with swampy outlet that extended 2-3 m 'downstream' SE, is now dry (Ref. 26729). Not a seasonal killifish and difficult to maintain in aquarium (Ref. 27139).
